PHILOSOPHY OF ART EDUCATION

Art teaches us how to solve problems —even when the problems seem unfixable. It allows individuals to think outside the box and face the unknown without fear.

As an art educator, I strive to refine students' skills in observation, strengthen students' abilities to think critically, and discover themselves through personal expression. I believe in creating an environment that allows a space for students to cultivate their voices. My goal is to inspire students of all ages to be aware, take action, and navigate the world with curiosity, strength, and compassion.

My role is to challenge students to take risks and use play as a fundamental element in the learning process. Building a community of inclusion and understanding is essential while maintaining high expectations for student work and participation. I believe all students need to have equitable access to complete assignments based on their individual needs. I engage in critical pedagogy and Universal Design for Learning to modify my lessons and practice for accessibility. As an educator, I challenge myself and address my biases about art, knowledge, culture, and standards. I value staying up to date on current social issues and listening to experiences outside of my own.

I wholeheartedly believe in a student-centered and culturally-responsive approach to teaching. I encourage students to understand that they are experts in their own lives and that I am not the keeper of knowledge. My lessons include inspiration from contemporary artists, focus on big ideas that encourage connections to the world outside the classroom, and promote social justice and anti-racism. In my art classroom, students find their voice and learn how to bring personal narratives to life.

Philosophy: Text

“As a classroom community, our

capacity to generate excitement is

deeply affected by our interest in

one another, in hearing one

another’s voices, in recognizing one

 another’s presence.”
