WHY ART?

One of art's most magical qualities is that no two things will ever be the same. Creating, observing, or questioning art allows us to reflect on the world and communicate.

Kelsey Hammond is an art educator in New York, New York, who views observing, questioning, and reflecting as a center point in her high school classroom. Kelsey teaches with a contemporary focus using big ideas and student choice to guide the creative process. Kelsey co-founded Art In Between and graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University (Boston, MA), where she received her Master of Arts in Teaching in art education. Kelsey brings a unique perspective to the arts through her undergraduate studies at Lesley University (Cambridge, MA) in Holistic Psychology and Art Therapy. She values an inclusive approach while making space for personal expression, critical thinking, and creative experimentation.

“The teacher is of course an artist, but being an artist does not mean that he or she can make the profile, can shape the students. What an educator does in teaching is to make it possible for the students to become themselves.”

― Paulo Freire
